Jeep lift kit basics: what you actually need at 2, 3.5 and 4+ inches

Lift height is the easy decision. The parts that keep the geometry correct at that height are where builds go wrong and money gets wasted.

Up to 2 inches

Coil spacers or slightly taller springs. Factory shocks usually survive, but longer bump stops and an adjustable track bar keep the axle centered.

Most 33-inch tire setups live happily here with minimal trimming.

2.5 to 3.5 inches

Add longer shocks, an adjustable front track bar, brake line extensions, and a transfer case lowering kit or slip yoke eliminator on TJ-era Jeeps.

Front control arms should be adjustable so caster can be brought back into spec — this is the difference between a stable Jeep and one that wanders at highway speed.

4 inches and up

Plan on a long-arm kit, a rear driveshaft with a CV joint, a steering upgrade, and re-gearing for the taller tires.

Budget for an alignment and a driveline angle check after everything is torqued to spec.
